Community Development Specialist – Prevention First Program – Part Time

20 Hours Per Week

The position of Community Development Specialist (CDS) goes beyond that of an educator in the areas of substance use, violence prevention and other topics as the need is determined. As such, the CDS assists the Prevention Coalition of Monmouth County Coordinator plan and facilitate one-time and multi-session programs for agencies, youth and adult groups and individuals focusing on environmental strategies that will promote specific policy changes and fill identified gaps in the community. The CDS must attend community meetings and participate in weekend/night programming/activities as needed/assigned.

The Community Development Specialist (CDS) is responsible for carrying out the prevention coalition initiatives. The CDS works collaboratively with individuals and entities throughout Monmouth County to reduce substance use by providing awareness, education, resources, outreach, and advocacy. The CDS should be passionate about the health and wellness of all people, with experience in grass roots community organization, cultivating and sustaining working relationships with community members, community partners and key stakeholders.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree and 3-5 years related experience and/or training; Certified Prevention Specialist, teaching certificate, or social work experience a plus
  • Valid driver’s license and a legally licensed vehicle
  • This position necessitates teamwork, an engaging disposition and strong interpersonal, written and oral communications skills. Must have familiarity with MS Office and virtual platforms
  • Evening/Weekend Hours Required At Times
  • Bilingual a Plus

Responsibilities:

The CDS must present leadership qualities including: nurturing established relationships and building new ones; collaborating with others, able to inspire others to act on causes, able to see diversity in all its forms, well organized and able to take initiative.

Additional responsibilities:

• Implements evidence-based, multi-session programs

• Collaborates with youth-serving systems to promote specific policy changes

• Prepares for and appropriately represents Preferred/PF at various meetings and functions

• Maintains a working knowledge of current drug trends and existing substance use and violence prevention resources and services

• Maintains a working knowledge of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs and violence prevention programs, resources and services offered by Preferred/PF

• Creates effective visual aids, handouts and hands-on activities for presentations

• Ability to calculate figures and amounts including percentages
